چکیده

We report on an analysis of the gas and dust budget in the the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the LMC. This is the first time we can quantitatively assess the gas and dust input from AGB stars over a complete galaxy, fully based on observations. The integrated mass-loss rate over all intermediate and high mass-loss rate carbon-rich AGB candidates in the LMC is 8.5 × 10 M⊙ yr , up to 2.1 × 10 M⊙ yr . This number could be increased up to 2.7×10M⊙ yr −1 if oxygen-rich stars are included. This is overall consistent with theoretical expectations, considering the star formation rate when these lowand intermediate-mass stars where formed, and the initial mass functions. AGB stars are one of the most important gas sources in the LMC, with supernovae (SNe), which produces about 2–4×10M⊙ yr . At the moment, the star formation rate exceeds the gas feedback from AGB stars and SNe in the LMC, and the current star formation depends on gas already present in the ISM. This suggests that as the gas in the ISM is exhausted, the star formation rate will eventually decline in the LMC, unless gas is supplied externally. Our estimates suggest ‘a missing dust-mass problem’ in the LMC, which is similarly found in high-z galaxies: the accumulated dust mass from AGB stars and possibly SNe over the dust life time (400–800Myrs) is significant less than the dust mass in the ISM. Another dust source is required, possibly related to star-forming regions.

Gas and dust budget of the Large Magellanic Cloud

Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Using mid-infrared spectra, together with photometric data from the SAGE programme, we establish a colour selection of carbon-rich AGB stars with intermediate and high mass-loss rates. We also established mass-loss rate ...

The global gas and dust budget of the Small Magellanic Cloud

In order to understand the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) of a galaxy, we have analysed the gas and dust budget of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Using the Spitzer Space Telescope, we measured the integrated gas mass-loss rate across asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs) in the SMC, and obtained a rate of 1.4 × 10−3 M yr−1. This is much smaller than the e...

The population of Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae

In this review we address the progress that has been made toward the understanding the population of Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae since the last Magellanic Cloud Symposium. Planetary nebulae in the Clouds are not only important as key probes of stellar and ISM evolution in these galaxies, but also reflect the evolution of AGB stars and beyond in lowmetallicity environments. We present the...

Dusty winds — II. Observational Implications

We compare observations of AGB stars and predictions of the Elitzur & Ivezić (2001) steadystate radiatively driven dusty wind model. The model results are described by a set of similarity functions of a single independent variable, and imply general scaling relations among the system parameters. We find that the model properly reproduces various correlations among the observed quantities and de...

Spitzer SAGE survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud II: Evolved Stars and Infrared Color Magnitude Diagrams

Color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) are presented for the Spitzer SAGE (Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy’s Evolution) survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). IRAC and MIPS 24 μm epoch one data are presented. These data represent the deepest, widest mid–infrared CMDs of their kind ever produced in the LMC. Combined with the 2MASS survey, the diagrams are used to delineate the evolved stellar pop...
